Class Descriptions

The board and director of SPS reserve the right to place students in the classes/level they deem most appropriate for the present year. Factors such as experience, reading ability and playing level are considered.  Age is not a determining factor, but social maturity is taken into consideration.

 SING! all-SPS community
Connecting across the community–all teachers, students and parents. Lifting our voices together.

Suzuki I entry-level class for all string instruments, Pre-Twinkle through middle of Book 1. Introduces students to basic group skills through a variety of activities including imitation, leading, listening, and musical games.

Suzuki II: group class for all string instruments, middle of Book 1 into Book 2. Explores more group skills and reading basics. Prepares students to follow a leader and collaborate with a larger ensemble.

Music and Motion: Musical skills taught through whole-body and large motor skills. Enhances learning of fundamentals such as rhythm, phrases, dynamics, tempi, and gesture.

Training Orchestra: Gives students their first experience of working in an ensemble under a conductor, as well as playing music with multiple parts. Skills include listening to other players, balance, blend, following instructions, and independence of parts. Primarily for Suzuki Book 2 players

Intermediate Orchestra: A rigorous and fast-paced ensemble developing the orchestral voice and ensemble skills. Students should expect to be in this level a minimum of 2-3 years. Suitable to players in Book 3 and beyond.

Advanced Orchestra: Development of the group sound, voice interdependence, advanced skill development in tone production, interplay of musical elements.

Sul Pont (At the Bridge) is SoundPoint Strings’ premiere, select ensemble, bringing together exceptional high-school/collegiate musicians who stand at the bridge between student and artist. Through advanced ensemble performance and intentional mentorship, Sul Pont members also serve as guides for SPS Advanced orchestra, elevating the next generation of SoundPoint musicians.

Chamber Music Experience: 2 6-week sessions per semester, including a Workshop Intensive, coachings, rehearsals and community service performances. String quintets, quartets, trios, duos

Music Theory Explorations
Any interested parents are welcome to attend music theory classes at no extra cost.
Basic Theory: fundamentals of written notation and musical structural/linguistic elements
Music Theory 1: structures of music: key signatures, circle of fifths, phrases, dictation
Music Theory 2: aural skills, sight-singing, dictation, minor keys, basic chordal analysis
Music Theory 3: Taught by a beloved professor emeritus from Southern Adventist University, this theory class may cover a wide range of topics, from part writing and voice leading to arranging and composition.

Hymnology for Families: new in 2026-27, this class for parents meets 6 times a semester, on the weeks opposite Parents’ Circle. It explores hymn singing from the aspect of use in the home worship setting and in the church service. There is no fee for this class, but we do ask parents to plan to attend all 6 sessions.

Parents’ Circle ALL SPS parents
Enhancing our skills as parents of musicians, raising our children for Good. Parents’ Circle meets every other week during rehearsals. One parent per family is required to attend, and both are always welcome! Our sessions cover a range of topics from practice tips to family values.

Parents, we FIRMLY believe that you are vital to your child’s music education, whether you know music or not. It is your love, guidance, approval and encouragement that will make the most difference to your child’s growth and success. Parents’ Circle is our gift to you, to encourage you in your precious mission. We expect you to attend and participate. Parents unable to attend regularly must make arrangements with the SPS director for other ways to contribute.

Thanks to Our Donors and Sponsors!

We could not make this program run without the help of many people who support what we do.  From the church who allows us to use their facilities, to those who donate instruments, or who donate  tuition for students who could not afford to be part of SPS, sponsors help make this happen.
